Project Crossway
Passivehouse Solutions are pleased to have been part of the Crossway Eco Arch project for Richard, Sophie and Oscar Hawkes. Our va-Q-vips were installed in the external doors manufactured by Oakwood Builders and Joiners providing the doors with the highest levels of insulation possible. Whilst our Newform Energy partners supplied the PhotovoltaicThermal system with heat recovery ventilation. Crossway was filmed for Channel 4's Grand Designs program.

General Information on Vacuum Insulation Panels

General information
Vacuum Insulation Panels (VIPs) transform the principle of a thermos bottle to a flat panel shape.

home-p1
VIPs are built from open pore materials like pressed powder boards, glass fibers or open cell organic foams. The core materials are wrapped in a high gas barrier film using a special procedure and then evacuated and sealed. The thermal conductivity of VIPs produced by va-Q-tec (e.g. va-Q-vip) is only one tenth of the conductivity of conventional insulation materials like mineral wool or foams: ca. 0.0035 to 0.0010 W/mK compared to 0.040 W/mK. Thus a 20 mm vacuum panel is thermally equivalent to 20 cm thick conventional foam or fiber insulation.

Advantages of VIP
* Up to 10 times higher insulation performance compared to conventional insulations
* Space saving but highly insulating constructions possible
* High quality and long product life time
* Patented production technology va-Q-seam
* Patented quality control va-Q-check

VIP applications
VIP are suitable for applications where only a little space is available but very high thermal insulation is needed. va-Q-vips allow highly insulating and thin constructions especially in the following areas:

* Packaging: Shipping containers for frozen, cooled and warm goods, etc.
* Buildings: Facade, internal and external insulation, etc.
* Vehicles: Insulated trucks, electrical cars, etc.
* Appliance and technical applications

Covered by the high barrier film the vacuum panels are automatically protected against external humidity. Thus a major problem of conventional insulations (e.g. fibers or aerogels) is solved.
